Kinda Sad
If you really think about it the begining story is actually pretty depressing. This book is about a like 12 year old kid that has a drunk dad that beats him, no mother, he gets taken away from the people who actually try to help him, and then to top it off runs away and starts living on his own at 12. I mean seriously what a downer.

I agree with what you said, that is very sad, but on the other hand of it Huck is a smart kid for all that he has been through. I mean he did somehow find an house with some things he could use.He waited by the water because he know there would be some bread coming along. He also caught dinner and cooked it! Most 12 year olds now wouldnt know or would be too scared to do this.
ReplyDeleteI agree it is a sad thought. But its good to know that at least he does have people looking out for him like Judge Thatcher, the widow, and his best friend Tom.
ReplyDeleteYes, but that's just the irony of it. Though the situation would lend itself to a very depressing tone for the story, Twain manages to create a very humorous tone and backdrop! I think, again, this light-heartedness in the face of adversity is a result of Huck's character. His mood is not dependent on the circumstances of his life.
ReplyDeletei agree most 12 year olds these days wouldn't know how to manage losing there mother and having an alcoholic father who beats on them. Huck is a very smart kid who knows alot about the way the town runs things and knows when there wil b food coming down river and what to look for.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree that this book is very sad because Huck always has a bright side to everything. He always thinks there will be a way out and always has an excuse for anything, like when his dad wakes up and sees the gun and Huck's excuse is that someone tried to rob them. He knew his father wouldn't have been mad because he was just trying to protect them. That is why I don't think that this story has a sad basis.
ReplyDeleteDoes any of this seem almost to convenient? If it wasnt written so well would we believe any of this story so far? I think Huck is put up on a pedistal while the author still tries to show is childhood innocence, but loses a lot of real life characteristics.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with this fact that this story of Huck is sad and all around depressing. Then again im not the type to look at the entire glass empty.his life isnt all that sad.I mean he DOES get away from his father and he does run away and find a peaceful place to live for a while. And so far he seems pretty happy hiding with his friend Jim just plain relaxing and enjoying life.So in my opinoin its not all gloomy.
ReplyDeleteThe beginning is depressing, but Mark Twain finds a way to lighten the mood. When reading about Huck's family struggle, never do you feel sorry for him because of a depressing tone. The novel is very fast paced to keep the reader interested without dwelling on the sad stuff.
ReplyDeleteTo the average person, this story seems very sad and depressing, but Huck doesn't know the difference. In fact, at the beginning of the story he says how much he doesn't want to live with the widow. He explains how he would rather sleep in the country and even sometimes snuck out at night to do so. So while this may seem sad to the reader, I don't think Mark Twain intended it to be sad at all.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the beginning of the book may be thought of as "depressing" it's not an overall depressing story. Twain portrays Huck Finn as a very smart young boy who as we can see is able to take care of himself. Though the storyline may be sad you don't really feel a sad mood when reading, and that is what is good about this book.
ReplyDeleteEven though it seems kinda sad, throughout the story Huck seems very optimistic about his whole situation. He seems very content with what he is doing. Huck seems to want to be living on his own and out in the wild. That's who he is and who he wants to be.
ReplyDeleteI agree Mason, hes just a boy, no little boy wants to be in that situation. So ya once u think bout it that is sad and he does what he can to survive.
